Amid the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, the country has deported 97 Nigerians for alleged civil and criminal offences.

In the past weeks, South Africans have been vandalising houses and businesses owned by Nigerians in their country, accusing them to drug peddling and other criminal activities.

Many Nigerians have also been injured since the renewed xenophobic attacks.

It was reported that the deportees were 95 males and two females, and they arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport from Johannesburg on Monday night.

Those accused of criminal offences among them were said to have been handed over to the police, while those who allegedly committed civil offences were allowed to go home.

The current deportation makes it about 500 Nigerians who have been forced to return home from different countries in the last one month.

Last week, 314 Nigerians were deported from Libya, while Cameroon repatriated 517 Nigerians on Thursday.

Last Friday, Germany, Italy and Belgium also deported 43 Nigerians, while 41 Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Mali returned home on Monday, February 27.
